Carrie Bradshaw
Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) is the main character and narrator of the 6 season series and two movie sequels of Sex and the City. She is a 30-something year old woman who has been living in New York City since her early twenties. She lives in a Brownstone on the Upper East Side (East 73rd Street to be exact) of Manhattan. She writes a weekly column called Sex and the City in the New York Star paper. It is a funny, real, and witty column that discusses sex, relationships, and issues with men; much like the show. Her column ideas often reflect the subject matter of the episode. During season 4, after going through a financial crisis, Carrie also becomes a free lance writer for her favourite magazine Vogue.
Her three best friends are Miranda Hobbes, Charlotte York, and Samantha Jones; the other three supporting characters of the show. All four of them have strong and yet very different personalities that come together and make the show what it is; hilarious, controversial, emotional, and exciting. Many say that New York City itself plays a role as the fifth central character. It is heavily and accurately represented throughout every episode of the series. They go to real New York restaurants, museums, and events such as Mercedes Benz fashion week, gallery openings, club openings, etc.
One of Carrie's biggest passions is definitely fashion. She lives for shoes and pretty much owns every extravagant pair of Manolo Blahniks out there. In fact, her complete and total obsession with Manolo Blahnik shoes in the show has increased the sales through the roof in real life. She loves the brands every girl does: Gucci, Dior, Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, Versace, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, etc. She often struggles to afford her extravagant taste but always manages to find a way to get what she wants. In season 4, she even takes part in a fashion show for models and real New York City people (the episode is called The Real Me). A rather unfortunate habbit of Carrie's is she's an on again off again smoker throughout the show. She begins as a smoker, and then when she starts dating Aidan Shaw (who can't date a smoker), she starts using nicotine patches and quits. However, when she has an affair with her old boyfriend Mr. Big,she starts smoking again, which represents not only how she is cheating on her man sexually but she is also cheating with cigarettes as well. Mr Big has a sort of power over her that she cannot resist . Then, she quits again and stays off smoking until the end of season 6 when she goes to Paris with Aleksandr Petrovsky.
Another major part of Carrie's character is the men in her life. Throughout the seasons, she has four major relationships (in order): Mr. Big, Aidan Shaw, Jack Berger, and Aleksandr Petrovsky. Mr. Big was introduced in the first episode of the first season. They are officially together three times: once in the first season, once in the second season, and then right at the end of the last episode of the last season whe he comes to rescue her from Paris just as she realizes she should not be there and wants to go home. Even when they're not dating, they maintain a frienship throughout all the seasons; regardless of the fact that her girlfriends tell her many times to stay away from him. Carrie starts dating Aidan 6 episodes into season three. She cheats on Aidan with Big and they break up when she reveals to Aidan what she had done. They then get back together in season 4 but end when Aidan wants to get married and Carrie doesn't. Carrie's relationship with Berger is brief in season 6. They first get introduced while Carrie has a meeting with her editor (for her first book of columns) and start dating at the beginning of season 6. They have quite a famous end to their relationship when Berger breaks up with Carrie on a post-it! She then dates Aleksandr Petrovsky known as The Russian towards the end of season 6. She spends a lot of time with him throughout the second part of season 6 and then moves to Paris with him indefinitely. Big realizes while she's there that he loves her and goes all the way to Paris to bring her back to New York. It was a very romantic reunion and the perfect way to bring them back together.
All in all, Carrie is a smart, funny, stylish, sexy woman who likes being in a relationship (although she is not closed to one night flings). She loves the city of New York, cherishes her friendships, and dedicates herself to everything that she does. She is a vibrant young woman who dresses in a way that nobody can compare to, she has a style that is so original that many of the things she wears or puts in her hair, would not work with anyone else. She loves life but can get easily discouraged, mostly when her personal life gets in the way.
